Your Brother laser printer says Replace Drum, Drum End Soon or Drum Stop, and you aren’t sure if you need a new part or just a reset. This guide shows you what each drum message means, how to tell a worn drum from a counter that needs resetting, and the exact reset steps for current and recent Brother models.
Quick answer
- The drum is a separate part from the toner. Brother counts pages on the drum and shows Drum End Soon, then Replace Drum, when it nears its rated life (12,000 to 45,000 pages, depending on model).
- Just installed a new drum and the message stayed? The counter doesn’t reset itself. On most 2-line screens: close the cover, press OK and the Up arrow together, choose Drum, then reset.
- Prints still look clean? You can keep printing on Drum End Soon. Order a drum now so you have it when Replace Drum or Drum Stop appears.
- Seeing “Drum !” means the corona wire needs cleaning, not a new drum. Slide the green tab back and forth a few times.
- Gray background, faded print or marks every 94 mm (about 3.7 in.) point to a worn or dirty drum. Replace it, then reset the counter.
What “Replace Drum” means on a Brother printer
Most Brother monochrome lasers use two parts that clip together: a toner cartridge and a drum unit. The toner holds the powder. The drum is the green, light-sensitive roller that carries the image onto the paper.
The drum wears slowly, so it lasts several toner cartridges. The printer keeps a page count for it. When that count gets close to the drum’s rated life, the screen warns you. Brother tells owners to check that they replace only the drum when they see a drum message, not the toner.
- Toner cartridge. Replace it when the printer asks for toner. Not the cause of drum messages.
- Green lock lever. Push it down to lift the toner out of the drum.
- Drum roller. Wears out over time. Never touch its surface.
- Corona wire tab. Slide it to clear “Drum !” and stripes. Return it to the home arrow.
- Drum gear wheel. Turn it to rotate the drum when you look for a mark.
| Message | What it means | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Drum End Soon | The drum is near the end of its rated life. | Keep printing. Order a new drum before the next message. |
| Replace Drum | The page count reached the drum’s rated life, or a new drum was installed without resetting the counter. | Install a new drum, then reset the counter. |
| Drum Stop | It’s time to replace the drum. Printing may stop until you do. | Install a new drum and reset the counter. |
| Drum ! (Drum Error) | The corona wire on the drum needs cleaning. | Clean the corona wire. Replace the drum only if the message comes back. |
| No Drum Unit | The drum isn’t seated correctly. | Take the assembly out and reinstall it until it clicks. |
Message names vary a little by model. Brother’s newer color models, for example, show Supplies Drum End Soon. The meaning is the same.
Reset or replace the drum: how to decide
A drum message is a page count, not a test of the drum. A drum used for small jobs can wear out before the count. One used for long jobs can last past it. Let the printed page decide.
-
Did you just install a new drum?
- Yes
- You only need to reset the counter. Jump to the reset steps.
- No
- Go to question 2.
-
Does the screen say “Drum !” or “Drum Error”?
- Yes
- Clean the corona wire first (step 2 below). It’s free and often clears it.
- No
- Go to question 3.
-
Print a full page of text. Do you see gray haze, faded areas, or marks that repeat every 94 mm (about 3.7 in.)?
- Yes
- The drum is worn or dirty. Replace it and reset the counter.
- No
- The drum still prints well. Keep using it and order a spare so you’re ready.
About resetting an old drum: on most models you can reset the counter without changing the drum, and some owners do this to keep printing. Brother says not to, because the printer then can’t tell you how much life is left. If you try it, watch every print for gray background or repeating marks, and replace the drum as soon as they show up.
Fixes for drum messages, cheapest first
-
Reseat the toner and drum Free
Open the front cover, lift out the assembly, and push the toner back into the drum until it clicks. Put the assembly back. This clears No Drum Unit and some false errors.
-
Clean the corona wire Free
With the assembly out, slide the green tab on the drum gently left and right several times. Return it to its home position so its arrow lines up with the arrow on the drum. If you don’t, pages can print with a vertical stripe.
-
Clean a spot off the drum Free
For marks every 94 mm, run the Drum Dot Print check sheet from your printer’s menu if it has one. Turn the drum with the gear wheel until you find the mark and wipe it gently with a dry cotton swab. Don’t use liquid or anything sharp, and don’t touch the drum with your fingers.
-
Replace the drum and reset the counter $
When prints show gray haze, faded areas or marks that won’t wipe off, the drum is done. A compatible drum from Swift Ink costs $24.99 to $34.99 (see the table).
How to replace the drum on a Brother printer
These steps are the same for the DR630, DR730, DR830, DR820 and DR920 families. Keep the old toner cartridge. It goes into the new drum.
- Open the front cover
Leave the printer on so you can reset the counter afterward.
- Lift out the toner and drum assembly
Hold it level so loose toner doesn’t spill.
- Separate the toner from the old drum
Push down the green lock lever and lift the toner cartridge out.
- Unpack the new drum
Remove the tape and protective cover. Keep it out of bright light, and don’t touch the drum surface.
- Click the toner into the new drum
Push it firmly until it locks. The green lever should pop back up.
- Reinstall the assembly and close the cover
Then reset the drum counter using the steps in the next section.
Careful: toner powder stains and is a fine dust. Work over a sheet of paper, don’t breathe it in, and wipe spills with a dry cloth.
How to reset the drum counter on a Brother printer
Brother’s drum counter doesn’t reset itself when you install a new drum. That’s true for Brother drums and compatible drums alike, so you’ll do this every time. Brother’s own warning: only reset the counter when you’ve installed a new drum.
Find your printer in the table, then follow the steps for that group. Model lists come from Brother’s online user guides.

Not on the list, or a DR820 model such as the HL-L5200DW or MFC-L5900DW? Search your model’s Online User’s Guide on Brother’s support site for Reset the Drum Counter. The reset sits in the same kind of hidden menu, and the button names match the rest of your printer’s menus.
Brother says Replace Drum after installing a new drum
This is the most common drum question, and the fix is almost always the counter. Work through these in order.
- Reset the counter with the cover in the right position Free
Most current models want the cover closed. Older DR630 models want it open. If the menu doesn’t appear, try the other way.
- Check that you changed the drum, not just the toner Free
Brother’s own help pages flag this mix-up. The drum is the larger green-and-gray frame. The toner is the part you lift out of it.
- Reseat the drum and toner Free
Make sure the toner clicks into the drum and the assembly sits flat in the printer. Then reset again.
- Turn the printer off and on Free
Some models only clear the message after a restart.
- Contact the seller Free
Any drum, brand-name or compatible, can be defective. If the message stays after a correct reset, or prints look bad on a brand-new drum, contact us and see our returns and exchanges page.
Which drum fits your Brother printer, and what it costs
Match the drum to the toner your printer uses. The toner number is printed on the cartridge label. Prices below were checked on swiftink.com and brother-usa.com in October 2026.
| Drum | Uses toner | Rated life | Brother drum price | Swift Ink compatible price | Drum cost per page (Brother / Swift Ink) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| DR830 | TN830, TN830XL | 15,000 pages | $157.99 | $33.99 | 1.05¢ / 0.23¢ |
| DR730 | TN730, TN760 | 12,000 pages | $129.49 | $29.99 | 1.08¢ / 0.25¢ |
| DR630 | TN630, TN660 | 12,000 pages | $112.79 | $26.99 | 0.94¢ / 0.22¢ |
| DR820 | TN820, TN850 | 30,000 pages | $159.29 | $24.99 | 0.53¢ / 0.08¢ |
| DR920 | TN920 family | 45,000 pages | $273.49 | $34.99 | 0.61¢ / 0.08¢ |
On a DR730 printer, a Brother drum adds about 1¢ to every page on top of the toner. A compatible drum adds about a quarter of a cent. To see your total cost with toner included, plug your printer into our printer cost per page calculator.
Color lasers: Brother color models such as the HL-L3220CDW and HL-L3280CDW also use a separate drum, and the messages work the same way. Some color models report the drum for each color, so check which color the screen names before you order. You’ll find every Brother printer we carry supplies for on our Brother ink and toner page.
How long does a Brother drum last?
Brother rates its drums at 12,000 pages (DR630, DR730), 15,000 pages (DR830), 30,000 pages (DR820) and 45,000 pages (DR920). For the newer drums, Brother bases the number on one page per print job. Longer jobs stretch it. Brother rates the DR920 at about 75,000 pages if you print three pages per job.
That means one drum usually outlasts several toners. With 3,000-page TN760 toner in a DR730 printer, you’d go through about four toners per drum. Small, frequent jobs wear the drum faster than long ones, which is why Brother states the job size behind each rating.
- Drum End SoonNear rated life. Order a drum now.
- Replace DrumRated life reached. Swap the drum when prints fade or show marks.
- Drum StopReplace the drum to keep printing.
A worn drum shows up on paper before the counter matters. Look for a gray haze over the page, faded print, or marks that repeat down the page. If you’re seeing lines, our guide to laser printer lines and streaks helps you tell drum marks from toner and fuser marks. Faint copies of earlier text are covered in our laser printer ghosting guide.
Frequently asked questions
Can I keep printing when my Brother printer says Replace Drum?
Often, yes. Many Brother models keep printing after Replace Drum appears, and the prints are fine until the drum actually wears. Once the printer shows Drum Stop, you’ll need a new drum to continue.
Do I need a new drum every time I change the toner?
No. The drum lasts several toner cartridges. Click the new toner into the drum you already have. Only replace the drum when the printer asks for one or the prints show drum wear.
Does a compatible drum need a reset?
Yes, the same as a Brother drum. Brother says the drum counter must be reset manually, so you do it after any drum change.
How do I clean the drum on a Brother printer?
For “Drum !” or stripes, clean the corona wire by sliding the green tab back and forth, then park it at the home arrow. For a single repeating mark, turn the drum by its gear wheel and wipe the spot with a dry cotton swab. Never use liquid on the drum surface.
Drum vs toner: what’s the difference?
The toner cartridge holds the powder that makes up your text and images. The drum transfers that powder onto the paper. They’re separate parts, so a message about one doesn’t mean the other needs replacing.
| Toner cartridge | Drum unit | |
|---|---|---|
| What it does | Holds the powder | Carries the image onto the paper |
| How long it lasts | A few thousand pages | 12,000 pages or more, so several toners |
| Screen message | Toner Low, Replace Toner | Drum End Soon, Replace Drum |

Why does my Brother printer say Drum End Soon after I replaced the toner?
The drum count has nothing to do with the toner. The message means the drum itself is near its rated life. Keep printing, and order a drum so you have it ready.
